The Week Ahead: March 15

Even though inflation is climbing, there is lots to celebrate this week

Walk the line

This week, the Federal Reserve expects to raise interest rates for the first time since late 2018. It's a difficult moment: inflation is climbing at 40-year highs, but Ukraine's conflict may stifle economic progress. So, Fed Chair Jerome Powell will have to walk a fine line of cooling down prices without causing a recession.

Get your green shirt ready

St. Patrick's Day is this Thursday. This weekend, Chicago kicked off the celebration by dyeing the Chicago River green – an annual tradition. (It's St. Patrick's Day, not St. Patty's Day, in case you were wondering. Unfortunately, we made that  mistake a few years ago and will never fully heal from the mocking.)

If it appears that all of your cool pals are in Austin, TX this week, it's because the South by Southwest (SXSW) music, film, and technology festival is in full swing.

Other things to celebrate:

  • More celebrations: Purim begins Wednesday night, Holi is Friday, and Hola Mohalla runs Friday to Sunday
  • The Formula 1 season starts with the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday
  • Spring officially arrives on Sunday
