According to the National Center for Health Statistics, pregnancy-related deaths in the United States rose 14 percent in 2020 when compared to 2019, from 754 to 861. The gap between black women and white and Hispanic women in terms of maternal mortality widened considerably. Black moms had a 3x greater chance of dying during or shortly after childbirth than white, and Hispanic mothers. The report also draws attention to the significant disparity in US maternal mortality rates compared to those of other nations. The rate in the United States is more than 2 times that of other wealthy countries such as the United Kingdom and Canada.
