Samsung Announces NFT Enabled TVs

Analysts Predict Many Metaverse and NFT-Themed Electronics This Year.

The South Korean technology giant Samsung (KSE: 005930.KS) announced that its 2022 Consumer Electronics Show will include a variety of televisions with an app that enables users to browse, purchase, and trade non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

In an official announcement, Samsung announced that the software would be known as the NFT Platform, stating, “This application features an intuitive, integrated platform for discovering, purchasing and trading digital artwork.”

The app, called an “NFTs management” feature, according to Samsung, will be included on all new Micro LED, Neo QLED and The Frame televisions as part of a new "Smart Hub" that “puts content curation and discovery front and centre with their viewing preferences.”

According to Engadget, the platform will “pull in NFTs from several marketplaces, so users can preview the art and see other relevant details,” including who created the work as well as other important blockchain data.  “Those who already own NFTs can also use the platform to showcase their collection.”

Several Samsung TV models – particularly The Frame – have previously been advertised as TVs that also function as digital picture frames, allowing users to display conventional or digital art when they are not watching television or streaming video.

The company has uploaded a variety of free and purchasable pictures to a Samsung-curated platform, but allowing TV viewers to peek into the greater NFT realm – and even trade them using their TVs – is a new direction for the firm.

The firm may seek to apply similar technology that it already employs in its blockchain wallets, which are available on a number of their phones.

The Consumer Electronic Show is held in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States beginning January 5th.  Many industry experts anticipate that other prominent electronics companies will also reveal NFT or metaverse-themed items at the event.
